Organisation

Impunity Watch (IW) is an international NGO contributing to processes for dealing with the past in countries emerging from violent conflict. IW promotes an integrated and participatory approach to transitional justice (TJ) and reconciliation. IW works with affected communities and local organisations to increase their influence over TJ policymaking and in the establishment of community-based TJ.

Context

IW Burundi has recently secured funding a new project promoting youth participation in transitional justice initiatives and peacebuilding in 6 provinces. The project engages young people in advocating and building a foundation for peace through community-driven transitional justice and creates space for youth advocacy on community-driven TJ. It empowers youth actors, with a focus on young girls, and pilots an approach using visual, literary, and performing arts to develop creative platforms for youth participation. The project is coordinated by IW and implemented with three national CSOs.

To be based in our Bujumbura office, we are seeking a Project Officer to join this exciting new project. The position is open to Burundian nationals only, with female candidates strongly encouraged to apply. We favour talent and personality more than experience. Young, entry-levels professionals are encouraged.

Job description

Under the overall guidance of the Head of Mission, the Project Officer will support the start-up of our new project, the design of monitoring, evaluation, and learning tools, and the implementation of project activities. They will work in close collaboration with the Project Lead. The successful candidate will work on strategies including community dialogues, youth centre trainings on transitional justice, policy forums, and on gathering qualitative stories of the project’s impact.

We are seeking someone capable of working with a high degree of independence, who is passionate about their work and committed to the mission of our organisation. The ideal candidate is someone who brings positive and creative energy to their work, possesses keen self-awareness, and is a an emotionally intelligent team player.


Responsibilities

  • • Contribute to the setting-up, planning, and launch of the project.
  • • Support partners in the development of their project narrative plans.
  • • Implement project activities together with the Project Lead and according to the action plan.
  • • Organise trainings for youth centres on transitional justice (TJ) and on IW’s TJ tools.
  • • Organise national policy forums and briefings on TJ with the UN and diplomats.
  • • Assist project partners to implement activities in the 6 intervention provinces, including monitoring the proper execution of partner action plans.
  • • Contribute to planning workshops, internal training sessions, and learning activities.
  • • Contribute to the development of M&E plans, including innovative methods for qualitative data collection.
  • • Organise data collection activities to gather success stories, evidence of impact, case studies, and lessons learned to be shared internally and externally.
  • • Support the production of project narrative reports by partners and by IW for submission to the donor.

Experience & knowledge

  • • A university degree.
  • • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of transitional justice.
  • • Experience working on transitional justice.
  • • Knowledge of M&E theory and practice.
  • • Demonstrable commitment to youth empowerment and gender equality.

The following would be considered a plus:

  • • A Master’s in transitional justice or a related field
  • • Experience working on project implementation.
  • • Experience working with NGOs in a related field.
