About OCHA Burundi

The humanitarian situation in Burundi has improved relatively since the end of 2017, in particular thanks to better agricultural production, the absence of an epidemic over much of 2018 and a relative improvement in the security situation. This was reflected in particular by the return of just over 60,000 Burundian refugees, mostly from Tanzania, and by a 20% decrease in the number of internally displaced people in the past 12 months. However, this progress, made against a background of high chronic vulnerability, remains fragile. Acute pockets of vulnerability remain in parts of the country, particularly in the eastern and northeastern border provinces of the country.

In 2019, 1.77 million people will need humanitarian assistance, which is twice less than in 2018. The humanitarian response will target 710,000 people, or 70% fewer people compared to 2018. The HRP will require financial assistance of US $ 106 million. The humanitarian response focuses on acute vulnerabilities.
