Organizational Context and Scope:

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, and the direct supervision of the Project

Development and Support Unit Coordinator, as well as in close coordination with the Media and Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant will support the design and publication of high-quality visibility material to showcase IOM’s work in Burundi.

FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Support the implementation of communications plans (social media plan, internal communication plan) in line with IOM media and communications guidelines.
  2. Support the drafting and editing of public information materials for IOM’s website and social media in clear and concise English and French.
  3. Assist with the development of content in the form of human interest stories from the field, photographs and video clips for both national an international audiences.
  4. Assist with the gathering, preparing and disseminating of public information on IOM activities.
  5. Support the timely and efficient publication and distribution of media content for the mission’s social media channels as well as the global website iom.int and other IOM media, websites, blogs etc.
  6. Assist in the establishment of internal coordination mechanisms with programme teams to ensure a common identity and unified / coherent messages.
  7. Support IOM’s media outreach towards donors, international partners, UN country as well as national and international media outlets.
  8. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Education:

  • University degree in communication, journalism, international development or related field from an accredited academic institution, with two years of relevant professional experience or;
  • Completed high school degree from an accredited academic institution, with four years of relevant professional experience. 

Experience:

  • Proven experience of public information and media content production.
  • Track record of data collection and coordination for public information and communication products.
  • Familiarity with graphic design fundamentals, especially branding work.
  • Experience of graphic production and photography from start to published/printed product.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills: the ability to be flexible and work well under pressure.
  • Excellent computer skills: knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email/internet software.
  • Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms as well as social media channels (X, Facebook, Instagram).
  • Understanding of migration-related issues in Burundi is desirable. 

Languages

  • Fluency in English and French is required (oral and written).
