Founded in 1917, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker organization that promotes lasting peace with justice, as a practical expression of faith in action.
Drawing on continuing spiritual insights and working with people of many backgrounds, we nurture the seeds of change and respect for human life that transform social relations and systems.
In Burundi, many people are seeking to improve their living conditions and regain their human dignity after years of conflict. AFSC is aware that development can be achieved in communities where sustainable peace has been built—where people trust one another, work as one, and have a common goal of developing their communities. The program in Burundi accompanies and strengthens civil society and local faith-based organizations who are reaching out to communities, using a three-component approach of economic reintegration, social cohesion, and trauma healing. The program also helps young people enhance their skills and exposes them to self-employment opportunities in their communities.
To achieve greater impact at the political level, AFSC engages with key actors and decision-makers to create an open environment where they can discuss and develop ways to address critical issues on peace with an overall goal of social and political change.
