JOB PROFILE

Location : Kirundo- Yaranda Commune

Position Purpose

Manage the production of high quality fry/fingerlings for the business in numbers as prescribe by the budgets and business needs. Keep the hatchery functional as per expected standards.

Key Tasks and responsibilities

Hatchery

  • Ensure that brood stock feed of the correct quality is always available
  • Ensure that correct number, sizes and quality of fry are produced and are under development at all times (daily).
  • Ensure that fry feed (minimum stock of 200kg) and any chemicals needed are always in stock in sufficient volumes (daily).
  • Ensure that breeding tanks are well maintained and prepared prior to stocking (daily).
  • Must keep sex reversal rate at above 95% male. Therefore monitor sex reversal rate through checks on juveniles going into production
  • Mortality weighing and disposal
  • Monitor water quality and exchange in all tanks and ensure proper levels are maintained and be vigilant about incoming and outgoing water quality (daily).
  • Ensure that fish are stocked at the correct densities according to volumes.
  • Manage performance target setting for hatchery supervisor and employees
  • Ensure that fish are stocked at the correct densities according to tanks
  • Ensure that fish are fed according to growth and feed chart calculations.
  • Identify and then implement (once agreed with the General Manager) strategies to maximize quality of fingerlings being transferred to the lake.
  • Ensure that Hatchery Operations comply with the recommendations of environmental monitoring and this is carried out at least every six months

Other Duties 

  • Ensure that Health and Safety legislation and plans for the section are adhered to and implemented by staff and other relevant parties.
  • Provide the necessary leadership and direction to ensure effective management of the resources.
  • Manage and supervise staff assigned to the section.
  • Create, maintain and enhance effective team working and working relations.
  • Organize, manage and control the protection and security of the section properties, including the initiation of legal actions where required and appropriate follow up.
  • Actively develop and participate in education and public awareness initiatives, projects and activities, with particular emphasis on those directly related to the section in the context of the company policies and strategies.
  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of the section property, vehicles and equipment and maintain an asset register
  • Manage the formulation and implementation of the fish health management plan (including disease diagnosis & treatment, consultation with veterinary consultants, drug treatments, disease prevention etc).
  • Ensure that the section conforms to all regulatory requirements, with particular reference to environmentally audits and waste disposal
  • Develop and maintain procedures and practices on fish husbandry that are to the highest standard and conform with best practice.
  • Develop and keep abreast of new aquaculture technologies relating to our fish species.
  • Carry out investigations, trials and experiments to establish best practice and assist research staff in respect of aquaculture projects.
  • Complete weekly daily sheets and maintain/submit other detailed records and statistics as may be required by the GM.
  • Carry out such other duties as may be assigned to the post from time to time by the Operations Manager and General Manager.

Qualifications

  • At least a pass at Grade 12
  • University degree
  • Science/Agricultural based degree or diploma and added advantage
  • Fluent in English and French spoken and written

Knowledge and Experience

  • Good computer and analytical skills.
  • Experience in managing a group of more than 10 people
  • the ability to establish objectives, set priorities and be committed to their implementation;
  • ability to plan and introduce change effectively;
  • ability to adapt to changing demands, meet stated deadlines and troubleshoot as necessary;
  • Good verbal and written communication
