JOB DESCRIPTION – Physical Education (PE) teacher

Job Title:  Physical Education (PE) teacher

Reports to:  Deputy Head of School, KIA

Location:  Kigutu, Burundi

 

Organization Background

KIA is an ambitious initiative of Village Health Works (VHW), an NGO founded in 2005 in Burundi.

KIA is a secondary boarding school created to educate a new generation of ethical and entrepreneurial young leaders in Burundi.

The students are at the core of their own transformative education at KIA.  The school identifies, selects and recruits the most promising students throughout Burundi.  Those selected must have demonstrated not only success academically but have also shown leadership and commitment to improving their schools and their communities.

KIA brings together cohorts of students from a diverse range of backgrounds for a powerful educational and leadership journey over four years. Competencies and skills such as critical thinking and character development are intentionally folded into a sustained high level of academic achievement.  KIA helps students to push the frontier of what is possible in a progressive and intentional sequence throughout their four years of secondary school and their further careers.

KIA’s mission is to serve as a model school to help reinforce and enrich the Burundian educational system.  In doing so it also prepares KIA graduates for success in universities in Burundi, within the East African community, Africa and internationally.

Position Overview

KIA is searching for a dedicated and experienced Physical Education teacher to join a dynamic team of dedicated educators in Kigutu. The PE teacher will be responsible for advancing KIA students’ physical abilities and knowledge of sports. The PE teacher will also be responsible for the welfare of the students and for ensuring that students can gain the qualifications they need to advance their education or their desired career paths after school. The ideal candidate for the position will be able to create a stimulating learning environment that is sensitive to students’ various abilities.

PE Teacher’s duties and responsibilities

The PE teacher’s key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and run PE lessons, including both indoor and outdoor classes
  • Ensuring that students compete to their potential, while protecting their health and wellbeing.
  • Motivating school students to take up new sports or athletic pursuits.
  • Evaluating the performance of students throughout the school year
  • Attending parents’ meetings and providing parents with required reports on their child’s progress
  • Training and coaching school sports teams to compete and succeed in nation-wide events
  • Organize and supervise the transport of individual competitors, school teams and other teachers to and from school sporting events.
  • Prepare students to pass their practical and theoretical PE exams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical education or related fields.
  • A minimum of one year experience in teaching sports at the high school level (preferably an English based school )
  • Excellent communicative skills in English
  • Experience in coaching organized sports at the high school level.
  • Excellent organizational skills, especially ability to manage groups of students inside and outside the school.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Team player with commitment to team’s success.
  • Precise verbal and written instruction abilities
  • Patience and emotional management skills for dealing with students of assorted ages and personalities
  • Leadership and French knowledge is a plus.
