Terms of Reference (ToR)

Professional development coaching for Teachers and Students at Kigutu International Academy (KIA)

1.      Background and Rationale

Kigutu International Academy (KIA) is committed to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous professional development. As part of its mission to deliver high-quality, holistic education, KIA recognizes the need to strengthen the skills and competencies of its teaching staff.

To support this commitment, KIA seeks to engage a qualified professional development coach to deliver targeted coaching services aimed at enhancing instructional practices, promoting leadership skills, and supporting the personal and professional growth of teachers. This initiative will contribute to the overall academic and organizational excellence of the institution.

2.      Objectives

The professional development coaching program aims to:

  • Enhance teachers’ professional skills and confidence
  • Improve teaching methodologies and classroom practices
  • Foster a supportive, collaborative, and student-centered teaching environment

3.      Scope of Work

The coach will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating coaching sessions in either English or French
  • Delivering training in the following areas:
    • Innovative teaching methodologies
    • Lesson planning and curriculum development
    • Exam preparation strategies (IGCSE Cambridge, American curriculum, and/or Burundian national curriculum)
    • Child-centered pedagogy and inclusive education
  • Collaborating with KIA teaching staff and school leadership

4.      Ethical Considerations and Safeguarding

All activities must comply with KIA’s safeguarding and child protection policies. The coach is expected to uphold the highest ethical standards, respect confidentiality, and prioritize the well-being and dignity of all learners and staff. Background checks and references may be requested as part of the selection process.

5.      Service Duration and Frequency

  • In-person Coaching Session: July 6, 2025 (1 full day)
  • Remote Coaching Session: July 7, 2025 (minimum of 2 hours)
  • Follow-up Sessions: September 15 & 16, 2025 (remote or in-person)

6.      Deliverables – Online/Virtual

  • Delivery of interactive virtual coaching sessions
  • Collaborative development of lesson plans and instructional materials
  • Submission of progress reports detailing session outcomes and feedback
  • Final evaluation report including recommendations for continued development

7.      Requirements

Eligible candidates must demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • Professional coaching certification with relevant experience in education
  • Knowledge of IGCSE Cambridge, American curriculum, or Burundian national curriculum
  • Ability to deliver both on-site and remote coaching sessions
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in teacher training, mentorship, or educational leadership

8.      Referral and Emergency Procedures

In the event of identifying cases that require psychological, medical, or protection-related intervention, the coach must refer such cases to KIA’s designated Safeguarding Officer or the Head of School. Immediate reporting and confidentiality protocols must be followed in all such cases.

9.      Capacity Building

The coaching will prioritize sustainable capacity building by:

  • Equipping teachers with practical tools and strategies they can continue to use
  • Encouraging peer learning and mentorship
  • Reinforcing institutional systems for continued professional growth

10.  Reporting

The coach will report to the Head of School and will be required to:

  • Provide regular updates throughout the assignment
  • Submit a comprehensive final report evaluating progress, challenges, and outcomes
  • Offer actionable recommendations for ongoing staff development

11.  Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Number and quality of coaching sessions delivered
  • Improvement in teacher confidence, skills, and feedback ratings
  • Observable enhancement in lesson delivery and planning
  • Teacher and student engagement post-coaching intervention

12.  Timeline and Key Milestones

13.  Budget and Resources

Applicants should provide a financial proposal outlining:

  • Coaching fees (daily/hourly rates)
  • Travel, accommodation, and incidental costs (if applicable)
  • Any materials or tools required for delivery

KIA will assess proposals based on value for money, relevance, and feasibility.

14.  Submission Instructions

Interested candidates should submit the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Proof of professional coaching certification
  • A brief technical proposal detailing coaching approach and methodology
  • A financial proposal (itemized budget)
