Organisation

Impunity Watch (IW) is an international NGO contributing to processes for dealing with the past in countries emerging from violent conflict. We promote integrated and participatory approaches, working with affected communities and local organisations to establish community-based initiatives and increase their influence over policymaking. We work to transform gender inequalities and promote youth and women’s participation. Our holistic MHPSS approach links individual and group trauma support with community-focused social action.

Context

IW has recently secured funding for a new project (Menya Ukire) supporting constructive dealing with the past and holistic MHPSS in Burundi. The project promotes social cohesion by supporting communities to constructively address multigenerational traumas, encouraging inclusive memory transmission, and increasing civil society capacities to promote holistic MHPSS. The project is coordinated by IW and implemented with partners across the country.

To be based in our Bujumbura office, we are seeking a Project Coordinator to join our team and lead this exciting 3-year project. The position is open to Burundian nationals only. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. The position is targeted towards mid- and senior-level professionals with a passion for IW’s work.


Job description

Under the overall guidance of IW’s Country Director, the Project Coordinator will lead project implementation, working collaboratively with the Head of Programmes and with a project team consisting of a full-time Project Officer, a MEL Officer, and finance team. The Project Coordinator will oversee all aspects of project implementation, including the execution of activities under IW’s charge, the coordination of seven project partners, project reporting, and all project-related planning. The Project Coordinator will ensure strict compliance with European Union requirements for reporting, implementation, procurement, and partner oversight.

Our ideal Project Coordinator has experience coordinating projects in the field of social cohesion, peacebuilding, and/or TJ, and is a subject-matter specialist. We are seeking someone with experience coordinating a multi-annual project financed by a multilateral donor, or someone who clearly demonstrates their readiness and aptitude to take that step in their career.

The ideal candidate embodies our approach to partnerships, defined by horizontality, compassion, and collaboration. They are highly organised, capable of coordinating multiple work streams in parallel, emotionally ntelligent, and keenly self-aware.

Responsibilities - Project coordination

  • • Ensures effective project implementation in line with project objectives, planning, and donor requirements.
  • • Coordinates the planning and execution of all project activities.
  • • Supports the MEL Officer to ensure high quality data on project impact and learning.
  • • Leads the drafting of all donor reporting, including quarterly updates, annual reports, and annual plans.
  • • Acts as the primary project focal point for IW in Burundi.
  • • Supports the Head of Programmes in liaising with the line Ministry and government-designated focal point, providing updates on project progress.
  • • Participates in meetings of the project Management Committee (second level of project coordination); leads the Country Coordination Team (third level of project coordination).

Responsibilities - Partner relations

  • • Oversees project partner coordination in accordance with agreed operational plans and budgets.
  • • Ensures partners submit narrative and financial reports in strict accordance with deadlines and reportingformats.
  • • Provides timely and effective support to partners in activity implementation, in ensuring consistent and harmonised strategies, and in independently solving problems encountered by partners.
  • • Develops and maintains good relationships with partners, including acting as the primary point of contact and liaison between organisations.

Responsibilities - Project activities

  • • Works closely with partners towards the effective and impactful implementation of all intervention strategies and project activities.
  • • Proactively takes decisions on adaptive programming and in resolving issues that may arise.
  • • Organises planning, evaluation, and coordination workshops.
  • • Supports the organisation of training workshops for staff and partners.
  • • Leads the execution of all activities under the responsibility of IW.
  • • Provides subject-matter leadership on TJ, MHPSS, and social cohesion.


About You

Experience & knowledge

  • o A university degree.
  • o Minimum of 3 years’ experience coordinating projects in a similar field.
  • o Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with international NGOs.
  • o Specialist knowledge of TJ, social cohesion, and/or MHPSS.
  • o Demonstrable practical experience in a field relevant to IW’s work (e.g. MHPSS, social cohesion, TJ, MHPSS).
  • o Experience working with civil society organisations in Burundi.

The following would be considered a plus:

  • o Experience coordinating multi-annual projects financed by a multilateral donor such as the EU.
  • o A Master’s degree in a field related to TJ.
  • o Publications in the field of TJ (e.g. articles, opinion pieces, etc.).
  • o Experience with MEL.
