Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and nongovernmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Background

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, and the direct supervision of the MPA Programme Manager, the successful candidate will assist in the implementation of protection-related
activities of IOM Burundi.

FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities:
1. Assist in the design and delivery of discussion groups, community dialogues and sensitization sessions aimed at diverse participants, on various protection themes, and issues related to
housing, land and property;
2. Liaise with local partners and relevant stakeholders, including local social services, police and administration, civil society organizations and any other relevant stakeholders, maintaining
positive and collaborative relationships;
3. Support the organization of workshops and meetings on protection themes, with local and national stakeholders;
4. Review mapping of service providers and stakeholders, as well as referral pathways related to response to Gender-Based Violence and other protection issues, in communities of intervention,
and systematically communicate changes to the rest of the team as well as stakeholders;
5. Provide clear and comprehensive reports on events organized, or participated in;
6. Analysis of risks and protective factors of community-based mechanisms with relevant stakeholders, to propose risk mitigation measures;
7. Assist with the logistical and administrative preparation of activities;
8. Refer vulnerable individuals, such as returnees, migrants, internally-displaced people, victims of abuse and exploitation, to the team’s caseworkers or appropriate services;
9. Assist in the monitoring of project activities;
10. Write monthly reports regarding the MPA activities performed to be shared with programme support and development colleagues;
11. Ensure full adherence to the principles of the Do No Harm Framework throughout all facets of work;
12. Document and maintain the confidentiality of all personal information of project beneficiaries to ensure programmed integrity and compliance to IOM standards of conduct and IOM data
protection rules;
13. Report on own activities in an efficient, clear and comprehensive manner. Effectively follow-up on deadlines, commitments, action points and deliverables;
14. Coordinate with colleagues in the field and in Bujumbura office work flow of activities regularly;
15. Perform such other duties as may be assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education

  • University degree in Social Sciences, Human Rights, Political Science, International Affairs, Migration Studies or a related field from an accredited academic institution with three years
    of relevant professional experience OR
  • High School Degree/Certificate from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant in the above field.

Experience

  • Experience in one or more of these key protection areas: counter trafficking, GBV, child protection.
  • Demonstrated experience in protection referrals, identification of victims and case management.
  • Demonstrated experience of organizing and facilitating trainings, awareness raising sessions and workshops.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Personal commitment, efficiency, flexibility, drive for results; capacity to work effectively and harmoniously within a team of colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds;
  • Computer knowledge use including Microsoft Office;
  • Experience with international organizations or international NGOs is an advantage.

Required languages

  • Fluency in French and Kirundi
  • Fluency in English a distinct advantage

Notes

Internal candidates of the Organization will be considered as first-tier candidates. This vacancy is also open to second-tier candidates (external).

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation.

Burundi has been an IOM Member State since 2007. In 2010, Burundi and IOM signed a cooperation agreement that led to the establishment of an IOM Mission in Burundi.

The mission works closely with the Government of Burundi in implementing the core migration-related challenges in the country. The Organization’s current main activities in Burundi are related to: 

Refugee resettlement and reintegration. IOM works in close collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Burundi to make the refugee resettlement to third countries a reality and as least arduous as possible. While UNHCR is responsible for ensuring the protection of refugees, IOM facilitates their movement to third countries.

Refugee assistance. Since 2002 to date, approximately half a million refugees were registered by UNHCR to return to Burundi from different countries. In addition, the country still has an estimated 100,000 IDPs. While a significant number of refugees have been assisted to return – which now poses an additional challenge to the country – there have been efforts to ensure that the Burundian Diaspora is increasingly engaged in the ongoing socio-economic and political processes in the country, and specifically in the current global and regional dialogue processes on migration and …
