Position will be based in Kigutu and report to the Supply Chain Manager

Background:

Village Health Works (VHW) is a grassroots non-profit organization that promotes social justice by providing quality, compassionate health care in a dignified environment in rural southwestern Burundi, East Africa. VHW provides additional programs in education, food security, and economic livelihoods and is in the midst of several infrastructure projects including a capital campaign for a new hospital.

Position Overview:

VHW is seeking to hire a Procurement Officer focused on regional and overseas procurement who will be based in Kigutu, Burundi to support planning and implementation for sourcing, ordering, and receipt of supplies and service-oriented agreements. The Procurement Officer will manage the full life cycle of this work, ensuring high quality services and compliant products are sourced.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify program needs in the procurement plan vs. consumptions, and forecast a plan for future deliveries for program related purchases including but not limited to construction materials, pharmaceuticals, agricultural inputs, education and other operational supplies and services
  • In conjunction with the local transport and customs expediter, prepare in advance all importation documentation related to procurement of above items in accordance with Burundian requirements to ensure the delivery of goods on time in Kigutu
  • Proactively and diplomatically resolve problems related to procurement with both French- and English-speaking regional and international suppliers
  • Work with the existing supply chain to stabilize the supply chain cycle in order to prevent shortages and ensure timely delivery
  • Maintain supply chain records and implement improvements regarding both tools and internal processes
  • Review requisition requests in collaboration with program leads, finance team, and other procurement team members and be responsible for preliminary due diligence on contracts with suppliers
  • Work with the existing team to improve efficiency on old and pending operations related to VHW assets and stock counts operations

Qualifications:

  • Relevant degree and 5+ years’ experience in Burundi in end-to-end supply chain management procurement and logistics.
  • Strong communications skills (in English and French) and ability to professionally communicate in a multicultural environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suites, including Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strong time management skills and high level of integrity
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a desire to engage in collaborative, capacity-building work
  • Able to function with a high level of independence, flexibility, and good humor
  • Desire to live and work in a rural setting
  • Available to work full time based in Kigutu
